Colleyville SWAT standoff ends with one person hospitalized with self-inflicted gunshot

A tense standoff in Colleyville, which prompted residents to remain indoors for several hours, reached a dramatic conclusion on Friday afternoon.

According to Dallas Police, their Fugitive Unit was conducting surveillance on a potential aggravated robbery suspect, leading them into the city of Bedford. Bedford Police were requested to assist with a traffic stop around 10:30 a.m. The suspect was eventually stopped on Brentwood Court, a cul-de-sac in Colleyville. Police reported that the man exited his vehicle while brandishing a gun, although he did not aim it at anyone or discharge it.

Subsequently, law enforcement initiated negotiations with the armed individual, seeking his peaceful surrender. After more than three hours, around 2 p.m., police resorted to using explosive, non-lethal distraction devices in an attempt to resolve the standoff. Following this action, the man retrieved the gun from the hood of his car and inflicted a gunshot wound upon himself. Paramedics nearby quickly administered first aid, and the man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police have not disclosed further details about the individual or his prognosis. Fortunately, no officers or residents sustained injuries during the incident.

Neighbors recounted their observations leading up to the SWAT standoff.

Brandon Hopper, a resident in the vicinity, recalled, “I was standing in the front yard and heard two gunshots, and then a gray SUV came flying out from a block around the corner, crossed over in a four-way intersection, and got trapped in the cul-de-sac down the street here.”

In response to the situation, people in the area were instructed to remain indoors and secure their doors.

Joshua Gettig, another neighbor, shared, “I’ve been moved a couple of times because they said we were in a line of fire. Hostage negotiators over here yelling back and forth with him trying to get him to surrender is what I heard.”
