Inspired by their son, North Texas family starts nonprofit for special needs adults

Every day, a group of approximately 14 adults embarks on an adventure across North Texas, eager to connect with others and learn new things.

Led by Darin Heare, the Special Needs Community Learning Adult Program (SNAP and CLAP) provides opportunities for special needs adults to socialize, build community, and contribute back. Darin and his wife, Jennifer Heare, founded the nonprofit in August with a mission to help members forge relationships and showcase their capabilities fully.

Both Darin and Jennifer have extensive experience in special education, drawing inspiration from their personal connection to the cause – Darin’s stepson, Jaxon, who has Down syndrome.

Jaxon’s zest for life and his friendships with fellow SNAP and CLAP members highlight the joy and fulfillment they find in the program. Celebrating Jaxon’s 22nd birthday at a local Chick-fil-A exemplified the camaraderie and sense of belonging he experiences within the group.

Transported in what they affectionately call the “party bus,” the members, known as Anchors, symbolize steadfastness and loyalty. Anchors like Jaxon bring joy not only to each other but also to those around them.

Currently capped for 14 families due to transportation constraints and limited funds, SNAP and CLAP aims to expand its reach and inclusiveness in the future. Darin envisions a community where Anchors have more opportunities for growth and acceptance, with multiple “party buses” traversing North Texas, symbolizing their impact and presence.
