Through Their Eyes: New exhibit showcases artistic journey of those with autism

“In Houston, Texas, art serves as both a mode of expression and a transformative therapy for students at the Monarch School and Institute. Led by Head of School Patti Pace, the institution witnesses daily how art aids students with neurological differences, including autism, in finding their voice. According to Pace, many individuals who struggle with verbal communication find solace in artistic expression.

One such student, Madison, finds catharsis in creating abstract art, describing the process as deeply therapeutic. As part of Autism Awareness Month, the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston’s Glassell School of Art has extended an invitation for Monarch School students to showcase their artistic prowess.

For Madison, the opportunity to display her work comes as a pleasant surprise, remarking on the significance of the occasion. Director of the Glassell School of Art, Paul Coffey, expresses pride in featuring the students’ artwork, emphasizing the value of learning from their unique perspectives.

The exhibition will be on display from April 5 to May 3, 2024.”
