2 drivers killed in high-speed wrong-way crash on I-69 Eastex Freeway near Bush Airport, HPD says

Early Thursday morning, tragedy struck on the US-59 Eastex Freeway near George Bush Intercontinental Airport as a wrong-way collision claimed the lives of two individuals. One driver, suspected of potentially driving under the influence, collided head-on with another vehicle, resulting in a fatal outcome.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m., prompting the closure of all northbound lanes near Rankin Road, causing significant traffic delays. Authorities worked to clear the scene, reopening the freeway by 10 a.m.

The wrong-way driver, described as a woman aged between 20 and 24, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The other driver, a 22-year-old man, tragically passed away at the crash site.

Eyewitnesses, including Mark Brawn, observed the wrong-way driver before the collision, noting the alarming sight of a vehicle traveling against traffic flow for several miles. Brawn’s prompt action in alerting emergency services likely mitigated further harm.

Surveillance footage captured the devastating impact of the collision, underscoring the severity of the incident. Houston Police Department’s investigation, initially focusing on intoxication manslaughter, was supported by evidence of intoxication observed at the hospital.

Sgt. Dionne Griffiths emphasized the avoidable nature of the tragedy, urging against drinking and driving to prevent such devastating consequences. The loss of two young lives serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel.
