Tax Day is Monday and help is still available

As the deadline for filing federal income tax returns approaches on Monday, the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in downtown Dallas will be open on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located at 1100 Commerce, Room 121 in Dallas.

No appointment is necessary, but be prepared for potentially high demand and the need to wait in line. Bring two forms of ID along with any relevant documentation related to your tax questions. More details on what to bring can be found here.

A list of all Taxpayer Assistance Centers and their available hours can be found here.

The center can assist with inquiries regarding identity verification, account adjustments, or making payments. However, they cannot help with tax return preparation.

If you know you won’t be ready to file your federal income tax return by Tax Day, there are options for obtaining an extension.

You can electronically request an automatic extension using tax software or IRS Free File here. Free File is available to anyone, regardless of income level, for requesting an extension.

Form 4868, the extension form, is brief and does not require a reason for the extension. It provides taxpayers with until October 15 to file their return.

Keep in mind that an extension to file does not extend the deadline for paying taxes. Taxpayers must estimate their tax liability and make payments by April 15 to avoid penalties. The IRS’s 1040-ES 2023 Estimated Tax Worksheet can help with estimating what is owed.

If unsure about the amount owed, taxpayers can start by reviewing their tax liability from the previous year. It’s recommended to pay at least that amount to avoid penalties, according to Dallas-based tax preparer Duke Alexander Moore.

If unable to pay the full amount, it’s still advised to request an extension. Many taxpayers may be eligible for an installment agreement, which can be explored further here.
