TxDOT launches driving safety campaign after increase in work zone crashes in 2023

TxDOT has launched a new driving safety campaign called “Be safe. Drive Smart.” in response to a 3% increase in work zone crashes from 2022 to 2023.

In 2023, the Dallas area saw 4,491 work zone crashes resulting in 28 fatalities, while the Fort Worth area had 1,778 crashes leading to 12 fatalities. Statewide, Texas recorded over 26,000 work zone crashes, resulting in 290 deaths.

TxDOT attributes these crashes to factors such as speeding, driver inattention, and unsafe lane changes.

To address these concerns, TxDOT urges drivers to follow five safety tips:

1. Slow down and adhere to the posted work zone speed limit.
2. Stay attentive, avoiding distractions and keeping focus on the road.
3. Avoid tailgating to allow ample stopping distance.
4. Be vigilant of road crews and follow construction area signs.
5. Plan for delays and allow extra travel time due to road construction.

This campaign coincides with National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed from April 15 to 19.

Additionally, TxDOT reminds drivers of the “Move Over/Slow Down” state law, which mandates reducing speed or changing lanes when approaching TxDOT and other vehicles on the roadside or shoulder.
