American Airlines pilot’s union reports ‘a significant spike’ in safety and maintenance issues

According to the pilots union at American Airlines, there has been a notable increase in safety issues, including reduced routine aircraft inspections and shorter test flights following major maintenance work.

The union has also observed incidents such as tools being left in wheel wells and items left in the sterile area around aircraft parked at airport gates.

A spokesperson stated on Monday that union officials have raised these concerns with senior management at the airline and were pleased with the company’s initial response.

American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

In an email to members on Saturday, the safety committee of the Allied Pilots Association highlighted a significant rise in safety and maintenance-related problems within the airline’s operation.

The union mentioned that American has extended the time between routine inspections on planes and has ceased overnight maintenance checks unless a plane requires special attention or scheduled maintenance. Additionally, the airline now conducts abbreviated test flights for planes returning to service after major maintenance checks or extended storage periods.

The union urged its members to report any safety or maintenance concerns they encounter.

Dennis Tajer, a pilot and spokesperson for the union, emphasized the importance of early involvement in assessing safety risks. He noted that recent discussions with senior management were positive, and the union intends to collaborate closely to ensure American maintains robust safety standards.
