Gabby Douglas returns to gymnastics competition after 8 years at American Classic

Gabby Douglas has made her official return to gymnastics, marking her first competition in eight years at the American Classic. The 28-year-old Olympic champion showed both signs of rust and promise, scoring 50.65 in the all-around and qualifying for multiple events at the upcoming U.S. Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

Having last competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she contributed to the team’s gold medal victory, Douglas never formally retired from the sport. Her decision to return was sparked by watching the 2022 U.S. Championships, and she has since been training in the Dallas area with aspirations of making the U.S. team for the Paris Olympics.

While her comeback has been somewhat secretive, marked by limited press exposure and skipping podium training, Douglas displayed glimpses of her former prowess. However, challenges remain in consistently integrating all aspects of her routines, as evidenced by struggles on bars and floor.

With upcoming competitions including the U.S. Classic and Championships, followed by the Olympic Trials, Douglas has limited time to refine her skills. Meanwhile, Olympic gold medalists Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey showcased their talents at the American Classic, with Carey claiming victory in the all-around and Lee excelling on bars.
