Astros option struggling Jose Abreu as top prospect Joey Loperfido set to debut in outfield

The Astros have taken a decisive step regarding Jose Abreu’s performance struggles at the start of the 2024 season, opting to send the 10-year MLB veteran to their instructional league team in West Palm Beach, Florida.

General manager Dana Brown confirmed that Abreu, the former American League MVP and first baseman, was absent from the team on Tuesday as they prepared for a six-game homestand. Brown stated that the decision to demote Abreu was mutual and would take effect starting Wednesday.

Expressing confidence in Abreu’s abilities, Brown emphasized that the move aimed to provide him with a fresh start and a conducive environment to regain his form. The Astros plan to make a corresponding move before Wednesday’s game.

Abreu, a Cuba native, struggled to find his rhythm early in the season, recording only two hits in his first 12 games. Despite Houston’s recent victory, Abreu’s performance remained lackluster, with minimal multi-hit games and extra-base hits in 71 at-bats.

Following Abreu’s demotion, the Astros officially promoted 24-year-old Triple-A standout Joey Loperfido, who will make his outfield debut against the Cleveland Guardians. Loperfido, known for his power hitting, can also play at first and second bases.

Notably, Abreu’s move coincides with the start of Loperfido’s MLB career, marked by a significant contribution in his debut game. Despite a quiet start, Loperfido’s pivotal at-bat in the fourth inning resulted in a two-run single, showcasing his potential impact on the team’s performance moving forward.
