Local disaster declaration issued in Johnson County after deadly flooding, storms

Over the weekend, severe storms and flooding wreaked havoc in Johnson County, North Texas, prompting the county judge to declare a local disaster on Monday.

During the peak of the disaster, 32 roads were impassable due to flooding, necessitating emergency crews to conduct 17 high-water rescues. Tragically, one of these rescues involved a young boy who was swept away by floodwaters and later found deceased.

Describing the perilous conditions, Johnson County Emergency Management Director Jamie Moore characterized navigating fast-moving waters as “scary.”

“It’s been a challenging period for Johnson County in recent days,” Moore remarked.

Emergency responders from various agencies within the county tirelessly worked to extricate individuals stranded in floodwaters. Moore himself experienced the danger firsthand while en route to rescue the Warren family, finding his vehicle submerged in high water. Forced to seek refuge atop his truck, Moore spent the next hour and a half awaiting rescue.

In another harrowing incident in Venus, firefighters rushed to rescue a pregnant woman trapped on County Road 616. Firefighters witnessed her vehicle being swept off a bridge into floodwaters. Remarkably, the woman managed to cling to a tree, buying precious time until a swift water rescue team from Red Oak could safely retrieve her.

As Johnson County grapples with the aftermath of the severe weather, residents are advised to stay vigilant and heed any warnings issued by local authorities.
