Residents of Harris County senior living complex frustrated with mold issues

In Humble, residents of a senior living property managed by the Harris County Housing Authority have been displaced for over six months due to severe mold issues, according to reports from.

Despite the outward appearance of the Sierra Meadows apartments off the Beltway in Humble, residents are facing significant problems inside their units. Mold inspections revealed the presence of mold on walls and flooring, prompting some residents to vacate their apartments. Ava Washington, a resident, recalls alerting management to a foul smell in her unit for over a year before inspectors confirmed the mold.

Vicki Shubin, another resident, attributes the mold issues to burst sprinkler pipes during the winter storm of 2021. She believes that subsequent remediation efforts were inadequate, leading to persistent mold problems.

While some residents have returned to their apartments, concerns persist about the effectiveness of the remediation efforts. Mold tests conducted last fall indicated the need for further remediation in several areas, including HVAC systems and supply components.

The Harris County Housing Authority stated via email that renovation projects are expected to be completed by May 15, almost two years after residents initially raised concerns. However, questions remain about the efficacy of their mold mitigation plan for over 70 affected apartments.

Allied Orion Group, the property management company, declined to comment despite multiple inquiries.

Residents like Ava Washington emphasize the urgency of addressing the mold issues promptly and effectively to ensure a safe living environment at Sierra Meadows. They are calling for swift action to rectify the situation and safeguard their health and well-being.
