San Jacinto Street in downtown Houston reopened after closure due to protest

Law enforcement authorities reopened a section of downtown Houston’s San Jacinto Street on Wednesday afternoon following its closure due to a protest near the Harris County Joint Processing Center (JPC).

The closure, spanning a half-mile stretch from Commerce to Wood streets, lasted until approximately 5 p.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

While HCSO did not specify the nature of the protest, photos submitted by an viewer showed demonstrators outside the JPC holding Palestine flags, suggesting a pro-Palestine demonstration.

Deputies emphasized that there was no threat to public safety during the protest.

The demonstration at the JPC appeared to be linked to an earlier protest at the University of Houston (UH). According to organizers, two protesters from the UH demonstration were arrested by university police. The group then reportedly intended to head to the JPC to demand the release of the detainees.

UH officials confirmed the removal of approximately 60 individuals from Butler Plaza on campus, citing violations of state statutes prohibiting tents and encampments. However, the university clarified that the group was allowed to continue its protest in compliance with UH policies supporting free speech and peaceful assembly.

UH is currently hosting its spring commencement ceremonies on campus.
