Keller neighborhood facing terror from above as red-shouldered hawk attacks people

In the Mt. Gilead community of Keller, a stunning red-shouldered hawk family has taken up residence in a tree, with three adorable new offspring nestled in their nest. However, beneath this picturesque scene lies a warning sign for passersby.

“They’re quite aggressive hawks,” remarked homeowner Daniel Schuman.

Over recent weeks, neighbors have reported incidents of the hawks attacking individuals outdoors. Schuman’s daughter bears scars from such an encounter, and she’s not the only one.

“I was suddenly struck from behind with such force that I nearly stumbled,” recounted Susan Torgen, a victim of an attack. “I instinctively grabbed my head, but the hawk had swiftly disappeared. I was bleeding, the impact felt like being hit by a baseball bat.”

Now, residents are taking extra precautions when venturing outside.

“We’ve resorted to using umbrellas, and some neighbors even wear helmets while mowing their lawns. Children are not allowed outside without helmets,” shared neighbor Alana Gray.

The postal service has also confirmed disruptions to mail delivery due to the hawk, forcing some residents to collect their packages from the Roanoke post office.

“The situation has escalated to the point where normal functioning in our neighborhood is compromised,” Gray expressed.

Consequently, Gray has diligently reached out to various agencies for assistance.

“We’re unable to intervene legally, so we must involve the appropriate authorities,” Gray explained. “We need officials equipped to handle this matter.”

The neighborhood is currently collaborating with a wildlife biologist from the USDA to devise a plan for the safe relocation of the hawks.
