Gov. Abbott tells Texas universities to ignore Biden’s Title IX revisions

Last month, Republican Governor Greg Abbott instructed the Texas Education Agency to disregard President Joe Biden’s recent update to Title IX, which now includes protections for LGBTQ+ students. This directive was extended to the state’s universities on Wednesday. Abbott’s office stated that he sent a letter to public university systems and community colleges, directing them not to comply with Biden’s revision of Title IX and to refrain from implementing any new policies related to it.

In his letter, Abbott reiterated his stance, stating that Texas would not adhere to Biden’s changes, which he believes contradict the original intent of Title IX. He emphasized laws he has signed to ensure campus safety and due process in cases of sexual harassment and assault, as well as laws protecting the integrity of women’s sports by prohibiting biological men from competing against female athletes. Abbott argued that Biden’s revision of Title IX exceeds presidential authority and undermines Texas laws.

The governor’s actions align with those of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who filed a lawsuit against the Biden Administration, accusing it of unlawfully imposing radical gender ideology through Title IX. Paxton and attorneys general from 22 states argue that the Education Department has overstepped its authority with these changes, leading to multiple legal challenges around the Title IX revisions.
