Beloved Hitchcock ISD aide’s son accused of beating, stabbing her to death in Webster

A man currently incarcerated in Mississippi has been identified as a suspect in the tragic murder of his mother, which took place at her apartment in Webster on Sunday. Marcus Jamar Thompson, aged 29, is currently held in Warren County, Mississippi, facing charges related to the unauthorized use of a vehicle, namely, his mother’s car. However, he is also implicated as a suspect in her homicide according to court documents.

Gayle Thompson, aged 58, was discovered beaten and stabbed the following Monday. Concern arose when she failed to report for work at Stewart Elementary in Hitchcock ISD, prompting a welfare check by Webster police, who encountered a distressing scene.

Investigators believe the crime occurred the day prior. A neighbor recalls hearing disturbances, describing it as a significant noise resembling the impact of a heavy object hitting the floor.

The neighbor, preferring anonymity, recalls observing Marcus departing in his mother’s vehicle, which was typically parked nearby. He recounts Marcus’s calm demeanor as he loaded fishing gear into the car before driving away.

Thompson was traced to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where his father resides. Allegedly, he made threats against his father upon his release from prison on March 24, having served a two-year sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The neighbor expressed regret for not heeding warning signs, stating he had cautioned Gayle about her son’s potential for violence.

Gayle Thompson’s passing is deeply mourned by the Hitchcock ISD community. Superintendent Travis W. Edwards conveyed the district’s grief, acknowledging Gayle’s significant contributions since 2014 as an inclusion aide dedicated to supporting students with special needs. Edwards expressed hopes that Gayle’s legacy of compassion and kindness would endure.

Thompson awaits extradition to Texas, with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office collaborating on the investigation.
