Houston Greek Fest returns for 25th year after long hiatus

After a hiatus of five years due to COVID-19, the much-anticipated Houston Greek Festival is set to return to west Houston this Thursday, promising three days filled with joyous celebrations until Saturday.

Damon Diamantaras, the organizer, reminisced about how the festival, which debuted in 1996, quickly became one of Houston’s most cherished springtime events, offering attendees a delightful glimpse into Greek culture.

“Our aim is to immerse people in the essence of Greek culture,” Diamantaras expressed. “We strive to create an ambiance that transports you to Greece, even if it’s just for a few hours.”

The Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church will be transformed into a vibrant festival ground, inviting visitors to indulge in Greek cuisine and pastries, enjoy cultural dances, partake in children’s activities, and browse through Greek merchandise.

Tickets can be purchased online at HoustonGreekFest.com, with an alternative option of gaining free admission by donating three canned goods per person to support Houstonians in need.

Previously, the festival attracted over 15,000 attendees, but the pandemic brought a halt to the festivities in 2020. Now, after careful consideration, organizers have decided to bring back the beloved event.

“The community’s desire for the festival’s return was unmistakable, and we heard them loud and clear,” Diamantaras affirmed.

Despite the challenges of planning an event typically requiring a year’s preparation in just five months, Diamantaras assured that seasoned festival-goers can expect the same enjoyable experience they’ve come to love.

From carnival rides to delectable Greek cuisine and the crowd-favorite Zorba the Greek dance competition, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival’s mission remains dedicated to sharing the rich heritage and traditions of Hellenic culture, with proceeds benefiting the Target Hunger Food Bank and outreach ministries at the Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church.

You can find Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church at 1100 Eldridge Parkway in Houston.
