Fewer Houston-area school closings after the storm are set for Wednesday

Following the rare derecho that struck Houston, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is making progress in reopening campuses affected by the devastation. On Wednesday, only 23 campuses will remain closed, a significant improvement from the nearly 40 schools shut down on Tuesday.

HISD reported that efforts to restore functioning air conditioning systems at all campuses are ongoing. To aid in cooling schools, the district has procured 120 temporary chillers and rented an additional 290.

The campuses that will remain closed on Wednesday are as follows:

– Benbrook Elementary School
– Black Middle School
– Browning Elementary School
– Burrus Elementary School
– East Early College High School (closed for ninth-11th grade, open for 12th grade final exams)
– Field Elementary School

– Furr High School
– Harper DAEP
– Harris RP Elementary School

Additionally, HISD is providing support to families in need of meals and essential items at designated distribution sites.
