North Texas police stepping up patrols for busy Memorial Day weekend

Law enforcement agencies across North Texas are gearing up for a busy Memorial Day weekend, with increased patrols both on the roads and in popular areas.

Dallas police have ramped up their presence citywide, particularly focusing on enforcing seatbelt laws as part of the Click It Or Ticket campaign by the Texas Department of Transportation. Drivers caught without seatbelts risk facing a hefty $200 fine. Additionally, authorities are actively targeting drunk drivers, particularly in busy areas such as Trinity Groves, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts District, Downtown Dallas, and Uptown Dallas.

Sr. Cpl. Brian Martinez from the Dallas Police Department emphasized the importance of responsible behavior, urging individuals who have been drinking to utilize alternative transportation options rather than risking their lives or the lives of others by driving under the influence.

In Fort Worth, police will be implementing heightened patrols in bustling areas like the West 7th Street District, Downtown Fort Worth, and the Stockyards. Officers in the Stockyards are initiating a summer crime-fighting initiative with increased patrols both on foot and in patrol vehicles. Plans are also in place for additional safety measures in the West 7th District, including retractable metal barriers, improved lighting, a safety ambassador program, and enhanced security cameras.

While these new features will be rolled out later, the focus this weekend will be on ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike. Officer Buddy Calzada emphasized the importance of community involvement, encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement promptly.

With a combination of increased police presence and community vigilance, authorities aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend for all.
