Texas Game Wardens urge caution on North Texas lakes this holiday weekend

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is issuing a reminder to North Texans to prioritize safety while enjoying the region’s lakes.

Anticipating higher lake activity, Texas Game Wardens are intensifying their presence on the water to ensure that recreational activities are conducted responsibly.

During a recent media ride-along on Lake Lavon, Collin County Game Warden Trent Marker emphasized the primary goal of ensuring everyone’s safety. While inspections will be conducted on vessels to verify boat registrations and safety equipment, wardens will also be vigilant for signs of intoxicated boating, imposing fines or even revoking driver’s licenses for violators.

Tragically, emergency responders are also bracing for potential drownings. Marker highlighted the silent nature of many drownings, underscoring the importance of preventative measures such as life jackets. He stressed that intoxication often contributes to such incidents.

According to TPWD, a staggering 85% of fatal boating accident victims who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Therefore, wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) is mandated by state law, with specific requirements for children under 13.

Before embarking on a boating excursion, individuals are advised to adhere to a safety checklist:

1. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) or life jacket.
2. Ensure children under 13 wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD while underway.
3. Utilize the boat’s ignition safety switch as mandated by law.
4. Avoid alcohol consumption while boating.
5. Avoid overloading the boat and operate at a safe speed.
6. Have a designated lookout in addition to the operator.
7. Stay vigilant for low-water areas or submerged objects.
8. Complete a boater education course.
9. Inform someone trustworthy of your float plan.
10. Exercise extra caution on personal watercraft.

In the event of encountering a reckless boater, individuals are encouraged to report the incident by calling 911. Further safety tips can be found on the TPWD website.
