Harris County Sheriff’s office calls death of 4-month-old girl found in hotel room “suspicious”

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are investigating the “suspicious” death of a 4-month-old at a Days Inn in Mission Bend.

Around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Earl Dean reported that hotel management called 911, stating that a child in one of the rooms was not breathing.

Investigators are still determining how the management became aware of the infant’s condition. The baby girl, identified by her family as Brooklyn, was reportedly sleeping in a drawer rather than a crib.

Brooklyn was found in the hotel room where she had been staying with her parents and 2-year-old brother. Major Dean noted there were no visible signs of trauma on her body. However, both the child abuse and homicide units were present at the scene.

The case is being investigated as a potential homicide. CPS was also on-site to care for Brooklyn’s brother.

“The death is under suspicious circumstances,” Dean said.

The exact cause of Brooklyn’s death may not be determined for several weeks, pending the medical examiner’s report. No charges have been filed yet, and it is unlikely any will be filed until the investigation progresses further.

Both Brooklyn’s 20-year-old mother and 39-year-old father were detained for questioning. Additionally, investigators contacted Polk County regarding active warrants for violent crimes against Brooklyn’s father.
