Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of college baseball player from Keller

A 23-year-old man was arrested Saturday, accused of killing a University of New Mexico baseball player from North Texas.

Darian Bashir faces a murder charge in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jackson Weller, a Keller native.

Police found Bashir in an apartment Friday night, and arrested him shortly after midnight, officials said. Police said he was caught on surveillance video shooting Weller outside of an Albuquerque bar May 4 and fleeing in a vehicle, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Warrants obtained by the newspaper didn’t specify whether Bashir drove the getaway vehicle and police didn’t say if they’re seeking additional suspects, the newspaper reported.

In high school, Weller pitched for Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth.

He transferred from a Phoenix community college to pitch for the University of New Mexico’s baseball team. An injury kept Weller off the team’s official roster, but he planned to play again in the fall, officials told KXAS-TV (NBC 5).

“The loss of Jackson Weller is devastating to the entire Lobo family,” University of New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nunez said in a statement after Weller’s death. “On behalf of Lobo Athletics and The University of New Mexico, I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who knew him — please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Weller’s funeral is scheduled for Monday in Colleyville. His family requests any donations in his honor be made to the Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
