Medical examiner identifies Houston teen who died in wreck that split car in half

The teenage driver who died Monday in a grisly wreck on the East Freeway has been identified as Francisco Hernandez, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Hernandez, 18, lived with his mother in northeast Houston, officials said. His official cause of death was blunt force injuries.

MONDAY: Teen driver killed, brother injured after car splits in half in east Houston 

Around 3:30 a.m. Monday, Hernandez had been driving a Saturn on the East Freeway near Market Street when lost control of the vehicle. Police said he ran into a pole holding up a sign in a grassy area near the freeway.

The impact caused the car to split into two pieces. Hernandez’ brother was in the car at the time, but he was expected to survive.

Police said they didn’t know why Hernandez lost control. Investigators said they did not believe alcohol was a factor. His exact speed was unknown.
