Texas City boy with autism drowns in apartment complex pool

A 5-year-old boy with autism drowned in a pool at an apartment complex in Texas City Saturday.

A Texas City Police spokesman said officers found the boy face down in the pool at the Veranda Apartments soon after responding to the mother’s call. She said the boy had been missing a few minutes.

Officers removed the boy and performed CPR before he was flown by Life Flight to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

He died shortly after arrival.

An investigation into the death is ongoing, said Allen Bjerke, a corporal in the Texas City Police Department public information office.

This marks at least the 19th child to have drowned in the Houston area in 2019, according to the Texas Department of Family and Health Services.
