Heat advisory issued for North Texas through Sunday evening as region braces for triple-digit heat

A heat advisory was issued Saturday evening for most of North Texas as triple-digit temperatures are expected in the region in the coming days.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory around 5:15 p.m. Saturday. It goes into effect at noon Sunday and will expire at 7 p.m.

The advisory covers Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Montague, Rains, Rockwall, Tarrant, Van Zandt and Wise counties.

Heat index values between 105 degrees and 107 degrees are expected, the weather service said.

The weather service said people should drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes, stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun, and reschedule any strenuous activities to the early morning or evening if possible.

Young kids and pets should never be left unattended in cars, and people should check up on their relatives and neighbors through the advisory, the weather service said.

The weather service said people should be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include confusion, dizziness, fainting or fatigue, headache, muscle or abdominal cramps, pale skin, sweating, rapid heartbeat and nausea.

Symptoms of heat stroke include headaches, dizziness, lack of sweating, red, hot and dry skin, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea and vomiting, rapid heart rate and breathing, and confusion or disorientation.

Anyone who is overheated should be moved to a cool and shady area. Anyone who may have heat stroke should call 911, the weather service said.

North Texas is expected to reach highs of 100 degrees or more on most days through Aug. 3, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported. Dry weather is expected through this week, with the exception of a chance of scattered showers Wednesday south and east of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
