60 people displaced, 2 hospitalized after fire rips through Fort Worth apartment complex

A fire ravaged a Fort Worth apartment complex, displacing 60 people and sending two individuals to the hospital, as confirmed by fire officials.

The blaze erupted shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in a ground-floor unit at the Handley Oaks Apartments located at 2120 Handley Drive.

Videos and images shared by residents captured flames pouring out of a downstairs window.

Leisha Crain recalled the harrowing moment, stating, “We had just gone upstairs, and someone came banging hard, saying the building was on fire.”

“When we came out, flames were shooting out, and the roof was ablaze,” she added.

According to residents, the fire originated in the apartment of an elderly man on the ground floor, who managed to escape just moments before his home was engulfed in flames.

Fort Worth Fire Department spokesperson Craig Trojacek reported that 13 apartments sustained damage in the fire, with two individuals from the scene taken to the hospital for treatment. Their condition remains unknown.

“At this time, they’ve both been transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation,” Trojacek confirmed.

Hours after the fire began, investigators had only just commenced efforts to determine its cause.

“We’ve still got crews that are working on scene to go back and make sure we got everybody out,” Trojacek added.
