Harris County deputy’s death highlights different ways law enforcement die on the job

The untimely death of Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy Omar Diaz is a reminder of the everyday risks law enforcement officers face while on duty, more than the gun battles that are made popular in  in movies and TV shows.

Diaz was placing crime scene tape around the scene of a stabbing last week when he collapsed. He died at a nearby hospital after having suffered a pulmonary embolism.

His death is considered in the line of duty, despite him never making contact with any person suspected of a crime.

Diaz joins thousands of officers around the country who have died while on duty in ways other than being shot, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. The blog highlights and archives every line-of-duty law enforcement death across the country, including dozens in Harris County since 1990.
