Body found during search for burglary suspects in northeast Houston

Officers found more than they expected while pursuing a group of burglary suspects early Thursday morning in northeast Houston.

Houston police officers were called to a scrap iron yard around 1:30 a.m. in the 3600 block of Schalker, near Jensen Drive and Cavalcade Street, according to Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson. The owner of the scrap yard spotted five men breaking after receiving an alert from his security system and immediately phoned police, Crowson said.

Officers rushed to the yard to search for the suspects and set up a perimeter to try and keep them confined to the yard. After cops caught one of the five suspects, other officers searching around the business found a man’s body inside an abandoned building nearby, Crowson said.

The body appeared to be that of a homeless man who had been in that spot for at least a couple days, Crowson said.

“It is a little unusual,” Crowson said. “Unfortunately, this is a remote area, so there’s no telling who’s been back there.”

The man’s identity was not immediately known. Homicide detectives are investigating to determine if foul play is involved.

Crowson said the body does not appear to be related to the burglary. The other four suspects remain on the run.
