Northwest Houston communities prepare for flu season

Northwest Houston area resident Carla Upchurch sat in a room at Cypress United Methodist Church waiting for her turn to get vaccinated. She just doesn’t have time to get sick with the flu, she explained.

I have a daughter with Down syndrome,” Upchurch said. “She’s adult, but it would not be easy for me to be really sick and her roaming around the house, so I don’t want the flu.”

With the onset of flu season, health officials recommend people receive a vaccination by the end of October. Northwest Houston communities have several options for people looking to get vaccinated, such as the Cypress UMC flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccination event on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Upchurch is retired after working 37 years as an educator in Cy-Fair, where she’d get her flu shot annually through the school. For a year or two after her retirement, Upchurch said she missed her flu shot until Cypress UMC began offering annual October flu vaccination events.
