Murder suspect jailed in connection with fatal far northeast Dallas shooting

Authorities have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another man outside a convenience store in far northeast Dallas last month.

Melvin Crowder, 25, was jailed on a murder charge Tuesday in the death of James Burks, 33.

Officers were called about 12:40 p.m. Nov. 20 to a shooting in the 12100 block of Abrams Road, north of Interstate 635 and Forest Lane. Burks had been shot and died at the scene.

Police wrote in an arrest-warrant affidavit that Burks was arguing with someone and “acting very aggressive” when he pulled out a pistol and pointed it at someone. Crowder, in turn, pulled out a pistol and fired multiple times, striking Burks, police said.

Burks ran a short distance before he died, police said.

Surveillance footage captured Crowder fleeing after shooting Burks, police said in the affidavit.

A witness who has known Crowder for several years confirmed that the footage showed Crowder, according to the affidavit.

Crowder was arrested by a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force on Tuesday, Dallas police said. Jail records show his bail has not yet been set.
