Coronavirus Update: Abbott extends social distancing measures, Dallas County reports 82 new cases

Good evening. Here is a look at the latest on the coronavirus and how it’s impacting Texans locally, across the U.S., and internationally.

The latest:

1. Gov. Greg Abbott took action Tuesday that will allow only essential services to remain open across Texas, a move that mirrors what many local governments already have done to slow the spread of novel coronavirus. All Texans must adhere to “social distancing” through April 30, Abbott said.

2. As an 86-year-old fights to recover from a January stroke inside a rehabilitation facility in Mansfield, coronavirus restrictions have separated her from her family and visits are limited to a window.

3. Dallas County announced its most new coronavirus cases in a single day Tuesday — 82 — as well as two additional deaths related to the disease.

How safe is it to go to the store?

“Well, we’re going to have to go to the store eventually. There are ways to protect yourself in these environments. Hand washing. Be wary of your surroundings. Don’t touch your face. Go to the store when it’s not as busy. I do that all the time anyways. There are things you can do, but you have to get groceries. If you can wait a little bit, this rush to buy food will calm down. You have to be practical. We can’t shut down everything.” -Dr. John Carlo, CEO of Prism Health North Texas

“My grocery store was fairly quiet yesterday. There wasn’t a whole lot there. From a social responsibility standpoint, three months of any item is probably not necessary. Let’s pace this. We’re going to be okay from the standpoint of food and toilet paper. We’re going to be okay. Just get what you need.” -Dr. Mark Casanova, president of the Dallas County Medical Society
