60-year-old woman with walker killed in West Dallas while being helped into minivan

A man was taken into custody after a crash in West Dallas Friday that sent a man to the hospital in serious condition and killed a 60-year-old woman, who was using a walker and being helped into a parked car when she was hit, Dallas police said.

Gustavo Vargas-Gonzalez, 33, is being charged with accident involving death and accident involving serious bodily injury, police said.

Police said at about 3:30 a.m., a 57-year-old man was helping the woman into their car in the 3500 block of Canada Drive, near North Westmoreland Road and the Trinity River, when Vargas-Gonzalez hit their car and both victims. Vargas-Gonzalez walked away from the scene without helping them, police said

Both victims were taken to a local hospital. The woman died from her injuries and the man is in serious condition, police said. The woman’s identity has not been released.

Officers found Vargas-Gonzalez hiding near a tree by an embankment in the 4400 block of Canada Drive, less than 2 miles from the crash.

His bail information was not immediately available Friday.
