A storm system is expected to move through the state on Sunday, bringing with it the chance for rain and snow to Dallas-Fort Worth, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) weather anchor Keisha Burns.

“Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s Sunday, which will mean a slushy type of snow that will accumulate easier on the grass than on roads,” Burns said.

While the chances for snow are improving, exactly how much snow the area could see is still uncertain.

Ahead of the potential snowfall, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties. The advisory, in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, does not include Collin County.

Areas under the advisory could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, with accumulations up to 3 inches possible in some areas, according to the Weather Service.

Slippery road conditions are possible Sunday, especially on elevated surfaces, the Weather Service cautioned.

Areas south and west of Dallas-Fort Worth will likely see greater snowfall amounts, according to the Weather Service. Those areas will be under a winter storm warning late Saturday through Sunday. The Weather Service cautioned that in areas under the warning accumulations of up to 6 inches are possible, and that some isolated areas could even see 8 inches of snow.

For most of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, accumulations are not expected to exceed 1.5 inches, and chances for accumulation decrease farther north of the area, according to Bianca Garcia, a Weather Service meteorologist.

“But these values may change as we determine where bands of heavier snow set up closer to the event,” Garcia said.

The greatest chance for snow will likely be late Sunday morning into the afternoon, according to the Weather Service.

Ahead of the storm system, Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday instructed several state departments to prepare resources and be on standby.

“I urge Texans in the path of this winter storm system to be mindful of changing weather conditions and take precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe,” Abbott said in a prepared statement. “Stay off roadways and exercise extreme caution as this weather event makes its way across the state. Texas will continue to work with local officials to ensure they have the resources needed to respond.”

Across Dallas-Fort Worth, North Texas Tollway Authority and Texas Department of Transportation crews have pretreated roadways this week.

Despite dustings of snow over the past few years, Dallas-Fort Worth has not seen a major snowfall event since March 2015, when 3.5 inches of snow were recorded at DFW International Airport between March 4 and March 5, according to the Weather Service.
