Garland to hold another COVID-19 vaccine event on Thursday

Garland will hold another mass COVID-19 vaccination event on Thursday, Jan. 28, for people who are currently at the top of the wait list.

The event was announced on Monday, after the city received another 1,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Like last week’s event, Thursday’s vaccinations will be administered in a drive-through at the Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Only those who are notified ahead of time are eligible to receive this vaccine, however.

“Vaccination will not be made available to walk-up customers,” the city said in a press release. “Those who registered to the wait list first are receiving invitations to the event and will be asked to provide a unique identification number made available only to them.”

The city’s health services department is still only administering vaccines for individuals who meet the criteria for phases 1A and 1B.

Phase 1A includes frontline healthcare workers and residents of long-term care facilities, while Phase 1B is for those who are 65 years or older and those who are 16 years or older with underlying health conditions that put them at greater risk.

The city will provide vaccines to anyone who falls within those two categories “regardless of where they reside,” the release explained.

For additional information, reach the city by telephone at 972-205-3900 or by email at GPH@GarlandTx.gov. Check the city’s website for updates.

During last week’s event, more than 800 people received vaccines.

As of Monday, the city has recorded 23,102 cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic first hit early last year. Of that total, 3,234 are still considered active cases, and at least 207 people have died.
