Man arrested in fatal shooting of 16-year-old boy in White Settlement, police say

A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy who was walking through a neighborhood in White Settlement with his brother, police said.

Jamaine Taylor, 31, was taken into custody without incident at a business in Fort Worth and booked into the White Settlement jail on a charge of murder in the slaying of Latroy Lewis, police said. His bail was set at $500,000. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Police said they believe Lewis was looking into a car June 16 about 4:45 a.m. with his 15-year-old brother in the 7600 block of Colton Drive, near Lockheed Boulevard and White Settlement Road, when a man began to yell at them.

The boys ran away and the man chased them in his vehicle until he caught up with them, police said. Police had earlier said the man accused the boys of trying to break into his car.

Witnesses told police the man exited his car and told the boys to get on the ground, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The man then shot Lewis and drove west, turning on nearby Ozona Avenue, police said.

An officer who arrived at the scene found Lewis unresponsive on the ground and cut off his shirt to tend to a gunshot wound in his left shoulder, according to the affidavit.

Lewis was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, police said. Detectives have also recovered a gun.

White Settlement police said the brothers were staying with a relative at a motel less than a mile from where the shooting happened. Witnesses told police Taylor was known to frequent the area, according to the affidavit.

“White Settlement detectives worked diligently and with the help of the community were able to identify and locate the suspect in this case,” White Settlement police Chief J. P. Bevering said in a written statement. “The department wants to thank those who contacted the department and provided information leading to the arrest in this case.”
