Teen indicted on capital murder charge after fatal robbery in Far East Dallas

A teenager has been indicted on a capital murder charge after a robbery in Far East Dallas that led to the victim’s death two months later.

A Dallas County grand jury handed up the indictment of 17-year-old Melvin Alexander Cruz on Wednesday.

According to police, Cruz approached 21-year-old Kasey Lewis about 5:45 a.m. Feb. 11 as he walked to his vehicle near his home in the 2500 block of Greenport Drive. Cruz brandished a gun and demanded property from Lewis, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the two, police said.

Lewis was struck, and he died from his injuries April 11.

Cruz was arrested April 16 and remains in the Dallas County jail, with bail set at more than $3 million. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
