Scattered downpours for Houston this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Keep your eye on the radar and an umbrella in your hand. We are in for more scattered downpours this weekend.

You can expect some of the stronger downpours could produce a quick inch of rain, wind gusts to 40 mph, penny size hail, and frequent lightning. If you don’t get caught under one of those cooling downpours, you can expect steamy conditions. Afternoon highs will warm in the low 90s with heat index values near 100.

What can I expect this weekend?
Enough moisture will be left around to generate a chance for downpours both afternoons. Temperatures will be a touch below average both days with lows in the low 70s and highs in the low 90s. If you do get an afternoon downpour, it should drop less than half an inch of rain in most cases. A Saharan dust cloud will stick around through Saturday, reducing the air quality and bring a little haze to the sky.

Will the rainy pattern let up next week?
In a word, no. Another summer front will push down the Plains and stall out just north of Houston. That boundary will generate widespread showers, thunderstorms, and clouds Tuesday through Thursday. There is washout potential on these days, so if you have outdoor plans it might be good to have a “plan B” ready to go just in case. The good news is high temperatures may peak in the 80s all three of those days.
