A 30-year-old man was arrested early Sunday in Garland on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and causing a fiery car crash that killed two people, police say.
Gustavo Huerta Jr. was booked into the Garland Detention Center on two counts of intoxication manslaughter. His bail amount had not been set, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
Garland police said Huerta was driving a tan SUV west on Highway 66, near Dexham Road and East Centerville Road, about 2:30 a.m. when he rear-ended a maroon passenger car, causing the vehicle to hit a concrete barrier, overturn and then crash and burn in a ditch.
Both of the car’s occupants, who have not been identified, were pronounced dead at the scene. Huerta stayed at the crash site and investigators later determined he was impaired, police said.
It was unclear how police determined Huerta was intoxicated. Police did not release any additional details
