Partial apartment collapse displaces 31 people in Lower Greenville; no injuries

The roof of an apartment building in Lower Greenville partially collapsed Sunday afternoon, displacing 31 people.

The incident was reported about 3:30 p.m. on Marquita Avenue and Matilda Street. All 31 residents in the building were accounted for, and there were no injuries, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

The sidewalk in front of the apartment building, which had 12 units and included two floors and an underground parking garage, was littered with bricks from the building’s facade. Chunks of wall were missing from near the building’s roof.

The building that suffered the collapse was evacuated, along with the neighboring building, which is separated by a breezeway. In all, 24 apartments were left uninhabitable, authorities said.

Evans said The American Red Cross would provide residents with immediate assistance. The city’s office of emergency services will determine whether residents need longer-term accommodations.

The cause of the collapse is undetermined, Evans said. A structural engineer will determine whether the building can be saved.
