Rainy pattern developing Labor Day weekend could bring street flooding

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — September begins like August ended: Seasonally hot with a chance for an afternoon downpour. By the first weekend of September, widespread rains will return to southeast Texas and possibly flood streets.

Rain chances are lower again Thursday, but widespread rains return for the holiday weekend ahead.

Thursday morning will start dry and humid with low temperatures in the upper 70s. Sunshine will again warm temperatures into the mid-90s before scattered downpours pop up in the afternoon. Any shower or thunderstorm that pops up Thursday could drop a quick inch of rain. Rain coverage will be higher north of I-10 than south of I-10, but that will flip over the weekend as a deep surge of tropical moisture arrives from the Gulf.

Will the holiday weekend be a washout?

At this time we are not calling for a complete washout, but it does have washout potential at times. If you have outdoor plans, it would be wise to draw up a “plan B” in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. The greatest chance for a washout will be in our coastal counties.

How much rain could we get?

Rainfall totals will generally range from 2-4″ north of I-10 and 4-6″ south of I-10. There will be locally higher amounts, especially near the coast, and street flooding is possible.

What’s happening in the tropics?

There are three areas of potential development that we are monitoring. For the very latest check out our daily tropical update.
