Rainy pattern developing Labor Day weekend could bring street flooding

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Rain chances are on the rise as we head into the holiday weekend, and you’ll want to draw up some indoor options in case your outdoor plans get rained out.

Friday starts seasonal and dry with sunrise temperatures in the mid 70s. Scattered downpours will pop up once temperatures warm into the lower 90s Friday afternoon. Any shower or thunderstorm today could drop a quick inch of rain and lead to minor street flooding. Lightning will also be common in these downpours, which could delay some Friday night football games. Where it does rain late Friday afternoon, it should end by 9 p.m.

A deep surge of tropical moisture arrives from the Gulf on Saturday, and as it gets lifted by an upper low over Texas, slow-moving downpours will develop in a widespread fashion.

Will the entire holiday weekend be a washout?

At this time we are not calling for a complete washout, but it does have washout potential at times. If you have outdoor plans, it would be wise to draw up a “plan B” in case the weather rains them out. The greatest chance for a washout will be in our coastal counties.

How much rain could we get?

Rainfall totals will generally range from 1-4″ north of I-10 and 4-6″ south of I-10. There will be locally higher amounts, especially near the coast, and street flooding is possible.

What’s happening in the tropics?

After the quietest August in 25 years, Tropical Storm Danielle has formed on the first day of September. It is predicted to become the first hurricane of the season. For the very latest check out our daily tropical update.
