Weather Alert Day: Severe storms possible ahead of the World Series Friday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The World Series isn’t the only thing rolling into Houston Friday. A round of severe weather is also possible as a line of thunderstorms sweeps through much of Texas.

Before the weather gets rough, we get to enjoy one more absolutely stunning fall day. Thursday is another “dress in layers” kind of day for Southeast Texas. Thursday morning will start with temperatures in the upper 40s around sunrise, then rapidly warm into the upper 70s for the afternoon. The sky will be mainly sunny with high clouds approaching late in the day. On Thursday night the sky will cloud over ahead of Friday’s storm system.

How stormy will it be on Friday?

Friday will start off cloudy with a few showers rolling in from the Gulf of Mexico. The main line of thunderstorms will push through during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Wind shear will be high, which will allow storms to rotate and possibly produce severe weather, including isolated tornadoes. Our biggest question mark is how far north a warm front will push in unstable air from the Gulf. If the warm front stays mostly offshore, then we’ll still get rain but no severe weather. However, if the warm front pushes all the way to Houston, then severe weather will be more likely for the Bayou City. The worst of the weather should be long gone by first pitch for the World Series, but showers could linger into the game.

How much rain could we get?

Most of us can expect a quick inch or two of rain, which could lead to brief street flooding.

What can we expect for Halloween weekend?

The cool front coming in behind the storms will bring us another round of cooler, drier weather. It will be breezy, mostly cloudy, and cool for Saturday with highs in the 60s. Sunday brings more sunshine and a high in the 70s. The nice weather should continue into Monday making for perfect trick-or-treat weather Monday night.
