Rain chances drop off this weekend but return next week as the pattern changes

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Your chance of rain is going down Thursday as moisture levels drop over Southeast Texas. That said, there’s still a small 10% chance you’ll get a heavy downpour.

Temperatures will start off in the low 70s then warm into the mid 90s during the afternoon, near record levels for this time of year. Any shower that pops up in that heat could drop a quick inch of rain along with lightning and gusty winds over 40 mph, but most will stay dry.

What can we expect for the weekend?

Temperatures this weekend will climb into the mid-to-upper 90s, near record values for this time of year. It will also be fairly sunny both Saturday and Sunday, so if you plan to spend the weekend poolside, make sure to protect yourself from the sun.

How does next week look?

Right now it looks like our hottest first week of October in Houston’s recorded history, but there are signs the pattern will change toward the end of the week as colder air finally starts spilling down through Canada into the United States. This will bring rain chances back to Southeast Texas late next week.

When will it start to feel like fall?

We will likely have to wait until the second week of October for our first chance at getting a cold front that brings a real taste of fall. On average, Houston’s first morning low in the 50s occurs on Sept. 29, but this year we will be waiting much longer than normal in Houston.

Are there any other tropical threats on the horizon for the Gulf of Mexico?

At this time, no tropical development is expected in the Gulf in the next 7 days. Tropical Storm Philippe will likely weaken over the next few days. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our tropical webpage. Tropical Update page.
