Storms pass, but high water still holding up SE Texas highways

Following extensive flooding last week, US 59 in Polk and San Jacinto counties has reopened after temporary closure. However, the risk of encountering flooded streets and feeder roads persists, with many areas still unsafe for travel.

Motorists are reminded to avoid driving through high water if encountered. Instead, it’s crucial to turn around and find an alternate route to ensure safety.

As of Wednesday, May 8, at 6 p.m., Houston Transtar has reported the following locations with high water:

– IH-69 Eastex Northbound at San Jacinto River, Frontage Road U-turn will be closed starting Thursday at 9 a.m.
– IH-69 Eastex Southbound At San Jacinto River, Frontage road U-turn will be closed starting Thursday at 9 a.m.
– FM-1485 Eastbound At Montgomery-Harris County Line All Mainlanes have been closed since Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 12:20 AM
– FM-1485 Northbound At Harris-Montgomery County Line All Mainlanes have been closed since Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 3:58 AM

Despite the expiration of the National Weather Service’s flood watch on Sunday, moderate to major river flooding is anticipated to remain a concern for at least a week. Motorists are urged not to circumvent any remaining barricades for their safety.
