Remnants of Otis bring rain to Houston, and a major cool down is coming Sunday night

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Widespread showers and thunderstorms from the renants of Otis could cause street flooding through Friday afternoon, and a powerful fall front brings a major temperature change next week.

In the midst of all this, the National Weather Service issued three different Tornado Warnings in the 6 p.m. hour for various parts of Montgomery County, as well as portions of Waller and Harris counties earlier.

Those alerts were allowed to expire.

Rain continues to roll through southeast Texas, and it will continue off and on through Friday afternoon. Rain could be heavy at times which could lead to isolated street flooding. We also could see storms train which could lead to 3-6″ of rain. These higher amounts are most likely to occur northwest of Houston.

With all the rain around, temperatures will be limited to the 70s and 80s.

How long will the remnants of Otis bring us rain chances?

Moisture levels will remain elevated for Friday, keeping a 40% chance for scattered downpours in the forecast, especially during the afternoon. Those rain chances drop down to 20% for Saturday as moisture from Otis lifts north.

When is that strong cold front supposed to arrive?

The timing of the front is still expected to reach Houston sometime Sunday evening, but it’s possible it could sneak in as early as Sunday afternoon. While the timing isn’t completely set in stone, we have high confidence that it will be significantly cooler for Halloween and the first few days of November.

What’s the early outlook for trick-or-treat time next Tuesday?

We are very confident it will be chilly, with temperatures slowly dropping through the 50s as the evening goes on. We are also fairly confident it will be dry, but we cannot guarantee there won’t be any lingering rain showers. For now, we are keeping a 20% chance of showers in the forecast and will keep you posted as the time draws near.

How cold will it get behind this front?

Our coldest highs will be Monday and Tuesday when it doesn’t warm out of the 50s. With the wind and clouds, it will feel even colder, so you’ll want a warm jacket. Once the clouds clear out by Wednesday, it will get even colder at night. Next Thursday, we could get our first morning with widespread lows in the upper 30s!

What is happening in the tropics?

We continue to track the remnants of Otis and a new system developing behind it in the Pacific. For our latest tropical update, head to our Tropical Update page.
