National Hurricane Preparedness Week reminds you to get ready now for storms

In recognition of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, a crucial reminder is being sounded across the nation that hurricane season is swiftly approaching. Spanning from June 1 to the end of November, this period prompts vigilance and readiness for potential storms. Collaborative efforts from organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Weather Service, and aim to urge proactive preparation among communities, particularly those like Houston susceptible to hurricane impacts.

It’s imperative to take preemptive measures now, such as replenishing hurricane kits and familiarizing oneself with the latest evacuation protocols, particularly for those residing within evacuation zones.

Southeast Texas, including Houston, has experienced its share of tropical storms. The memory of Hurricane Nicholas, which struck in September 2022, remains vivid. The storm made landfall near Sargent Beach in Matagorda County as a category one hurricane, with winds reaching 94 mph in Matagorda Bay. The aftermath left over half a million Texans without power, with coastal areas witnessing rainfall of up to 15 inches.

Reflecting on the resilience demonstrated in the face of such challenges, visited the First United Methodist Church in Dickinson. During Hurricane Harvey, floodwaters inundated the church’s sanctuary, necessitating extensive restoration efforts. Greg Goodman, a member of the congregation who contributed to the post-Harvey cleanup, carries the lessons learned from that experience, serving as a poignant reminder during this period of heightened awareness.
