Investigation underway after 2 vehicles damaged and man shot in east Harris County, deputies say

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation is underway after a man was shot near the East Freeway on New Year’s Day, according to deputies.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a shooting call at 13899 East Freeway at about 12:25 p.m.

Deputies told that when they arrived at the scene, they found two cars that crashed into trees on the side of the East Freeway feeder road. One was a red Chevy, and the other was a maroon Chrysler. No one was in either vehicle.

Shortly after, the sheriff’s office found two men who they believe were in the Chevy at the Walmart on the other side of the freeway.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that one of the men was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound in fair condition. Deputies told at the scene that the other man was taken into custody for questioning.

Investigators said the driver of the maroon Chrysler fled in a third vehicle. Their identity is not known at this time.

A K-9 crew could be seen analyzing the scene for firearms.

Ronald Ross, a witness, told about what he saw leading up to the crash as he was driving down Frankie Street.

“It was horrifying. When I stopped at the stop sign, I saw these two cars just zip by at a high rate of speed. When I saw the first car, the red one, it crashed. Then the one that followed, it crashed too,” Ross said. “I would say they were probably going about 70 to 80 miles an hour. Super fast.”

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and deputies are working to get information confirmed that was provided by witnesses. At this time, it is unknown what led up to the incident.
