Houston Police Department has arrested murder suspects in two separate road rage shootings, which occurred just days apart

Two individuals have been arrested by the Houston Police Department, each charged with murder in separate road rage incidents that occurred within days of each other last week.

The arrests follow the recent promotion of HPD’s “Safe Roadways” initiative, which targets aggressive drivers. Although the initiative isn’t new and began in 2021, officials have emphasized its importance in curbing road rage.

HPD stated that officers are intensifying efforts against aggressive driving by collaborating with more agencies, thereby increasing law enforcement presence. While the exact number of officers and troopers to be added hasn’t been disclosed, it’s estimated to be in the dozens.

One incident involved the killing of 19-year-old Otarion Lomaz and the shooting of two women on the Southwest Freeway near Hillcroft. According to Sgt. John Stroble, the victims were returning home after bowling when an aggressive driver began tailgating them and subsequently opened fire into their car. The suspect, Oscar Vasquez Guzman, was identified with the help of video footage and witnesses.

In another incident, a 59-year-old woman lost her life in a road rage shooting on West Gulf Bank near North Houston Rosslyn. The suspect, Wydell Dupree Jones, has been charged with murder, with detectives indicating that the motive appears to be random.

On Tuesday, authorities issued 222 citations and made two arrests with the assistance of eight agencies. HPD Chief Troy Finner emphasized that collaboration among 40 to 50 different agencies will ensure a sustained effort in maintaining road safety, even when the initiative relies partially on overtime and volunteer officers.
