A victim of a road rage shooting, feeling frustrated as she awaits justice, expresses appreciation for the Houston Police Department’s safety initiative

Rosemeri Sabio, a recent victim of road rage, expresses frustration over the current status of her case but commends the Houston Police Department for reviving efforts to enhance road safety.

Sabio and her 7-year-old daughter, Luna, experienced a terrifying incident on July 9, 2023, when shots were fired while they were stopped at a red light on Bellfort Avenue and Telephone Road. Sabio recalls being honked at and followed before being shot at because she didn’t move quickly enough when the light turned green.

“My daughter got injured by a bullet,” Sabio recounts. “She got shot in the leg.”

Although Luna has physically recovered from the incident, the emotional trauma lingers. “Every time somebody is honking behind me, she gets scared,” Sabio shares. “We had therapy for her.”

In light of the incident, interviewed Sabio as the Houston Police Department revitalizes its “Safe Roadways” initiative to combat road rage incidents. This initiative involves multiple law enforcement agencies collaborating to address the issue.

Mayor John Whitmire emphasizes the commitment to enhancing road safety: “Our commitment is to make our roadways and communities safer,” he affirms. “We’re not going to rest until we’ve accomplished that.”

While Sabio appreciates the initiative, she expresses frustration at the lack of information regarding the progress of her case. “There’s no information or no update,” she laments. “They wouldn’t answer the calls or anything.”

In response to inquiries about the issue, HPD assures that they will investigate and provide updates on Sabio’s case.
