Here’s how and when to see the Snow Moon in North Texas this weekend

In North Texas, although snow might not blanket the ground, residents will still have an opportunity to witness the Snow Moon this week.

The Snow Moon, one of the twelve annual full moons, graces the skies each February. Here’s a rundown of what you should know about the Snow Moon and how to catch a glimpse of it:

1. **Origin of the Name:** The Snow Moon derives its name from various Native American cultures, reflecting the heavy snowfall typically experienced during February. According to the National Weather Service, February stands out as the snowiest month in the United States. Additionally, the Cherokee referred to it as the Hungry Moon, symbolizing the scarcity of food during late winter. Other names associated with February’s full moon include the Storm Moon, Wolf Moon, and Candles Moon, as noted by NASA.

2. **Unique Characteristics:** This year, the Snow Moon will be a “micromoon,” indicating that it will be at its farthest point from Earth. Positioned approximately 252,225 miles away, February’s full Moon may appear slightly smaller compared to other full moons.

3. **Visibility of the Snow Moon in 2024:** Allocate some time late on Friday, Feb. 23, until the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 24, to observe the full Snow Moon gracing the sky.

4. **Peak Visibility Time:** While the Snow Moon will achieve its maximum illumination during daytime hours in North America, the best viewing opportunities will arise just after moonrise on Saturday night. In Dallas, moonrise is expected at 6:39 p.m. The moon is anticipated to ascend above the eastern horizon around sunset and reach its zenith around midnight.

5. **Upcoming Full Moon:** Following the Snow Moon, March will feature the full Worm Moon, visible on the evenings of Sunday, March 24, and Monday, March 25. This marks the first full moon of the spring season.
