Last-minute preparations underway before Cowtown Marathon races kick off Saturday

Throughout Friday, excitement filled Fort Worth’s Amon G. Carter Exhibits Hall as over 23,000 runners made final preparations for the upcoming event.

“It’s been a steady flow all day, people picking up packets, shopping, just having a good time,” shared Cowtown Marathon Executive Director Heidi Swartz.

Among those collecting their bibs and t-shirts ahead of the race was Stephanie Rodriguez, who, along with two friends, is participating in the Cowtown for the first time by running the 5K.

“We live here in Fort Worth so it was just something that we felt we needed to be a part of,” Rodriguez explained.

Organizers anticipate this year’s event, spanning multiple races over two days, to draw crowds comparable to pre-pandemic levels. However, they’ve cautioned participants as temperatures are expected to soar to an unseasonable 80 degrees or higher.

“The weather’s a little concerning, but we’re just asking runners to extra hydrate, slow down their pace,” Swartz advised.

The marathon issued a heat advisory for Friday, prompting organizers to implement additional precautions such as providing iced towels, misters along the course, and ice baths at the medical tent.

With various street closures in effect, runners are encouraged to arrive at least an hour before their scheduled race time. Over 4,000 volunteers will be present to ensure the event’s smooth operation.

For those wishing to contribute, Swartz noted there’s ample space along the route for cheerleaders to support the runners, especially given the warm weather conditions.

The race schedule for Saturday includes the 10K starting at 7:00 am, followed by the Adult 5K at 7:45 am, and the Kids 5K at 9:00 am. On Sunday, races commence with the Wheelchair/Handcycle at 6:45 am, followed by the Half Marathon, Full Marathon, and Ultra Marathon at 7:00 am.
